STUART, FL.---On Thursday, May 17, 2012, the Stuart  Acacia Lodge Number 163 of Free and Accepted Masons (F. & A.M.) presented a  very special Law Enforcement Appreciation Evening celebrating the Honorable  Robert L. Crowder,  Sheriff of Martin County. The Masons also presented their  annual “Dollars  for Scholars” scholarship of $1,000.00 to Clark Advanced Learning Center student, Paige Turner. Festivities  also included a presentation by Alison Evans, Vice President of the Florida  Sheriff’s Youth Ranch.

Hundreds of the Treasure Coast’s “who’s who,” in law enforcement  and public service turned out to enjoy a wonderful meal at the St. Mary’s Episcopal Church Pittenger Center, located in lovely downtown Stuart at  701 E. Ocean  Boulevard. Family and friends attended to support and  thank Sheriff Crowder for his many years of faithful service to the residents of  Martin  County. The local chapter  of the Free and Accepted Masons meets at their lodge the first and third  Thursday of each month. For more information about membership, please visit:  http://www.30thmasonic.org/Acacia.html.

Freemasonry is a fraternal organization that began in the  late 16th to early 17th century. Freemasonry now exists in various forms all  over the world, with a membership estimated at around six million, and just  under two million of those within the United States. The fraternity is  administratively organized into independent Grand Lodges or sometimes Orients,  each of which governs its own jurisdiction, which consists of subordinate (or  constituent) Lodges. The various Grand Lodges recognize each other, or not,  based upon adherence to landmarks (a Grand Lodge will usually deem other Grand  Lodges who share common landmarks to be regular, and those that do not to be  "irregular" or "clandestine"). There are also appendant bodies, which are  organizations related to the main branch of Freemasonry, but with their own  independent administration. The local Acacia Lodge Number 163 hosts a golf  tournament annually to raise funds for deserving Martin County students. Third Annual SURFERS FOR AUTISM 2012

One of the most anticipated surf festivals of the year came to Stuart Beach on Saturday.

The third annual Surfers For Autism event allows children and teenagers with varying degrees of autism, the opportunity to learn how to surf in a positive environment under the instruction of professional surf instructors.

Since its inaugural Deerfield Beach event in 2007, SFA has been responsible for thousands of communication breakthroughs and countless tears of joy by offering families dealing with autism the highest level of inclusion in the safest environment possible.

Needless to say, SFA has established a cult following of dedicated families and supporters, as well as national media attention, for its traveling roadshow that hits beaches throughout Florida.

Like many families dealing with the effects of autism, many have tried other forms of therapy like horseback riding, but is still waiting for a breakthrough.

"Communication is the biggest deficient for the autistic child because they don't speak and he haven't spoken". Feelings anr high that they love the water and hopes are that this event will helps them come out of their shell even more.

26th Annual Marvin S. Cone High School Juried Art Show

Stuart – Twenty-six years ago, a local writer, poet, artist, entrepreneur and educator named Marvin S. Cone was inspired by the creativity of the Martin County students. He sought to encourage young people to even greater achievements by transforming the local high school art exhibit into an event that truly recognized student’s accomplishments. We gratefully remember Mr. Cone for his unrelenting enthusiasim for young people, for the arts, and for his timeless efforts in making this event what it is today. We honor Marvin S. Cone by dedicating this exhibit in his name.

This inspiring exhibition features artwork by students from Martin County, South Fork, Jensen Beach, Clark Tech High Schools and The Pine School. Their teachers, parents, school officials and sponsors of the event presented at the awards presentation. The high school student artwork will be at the Court House Cultural Center Gallery through June 8th.

The art teachers at each school select each piece of artwork for entry in the exhibit. It is a highly competitive process; the categories for cash awards are photography, painting, sculpture, mixed media/assemblage, and drawing. Additionally each high school principal and the School Superintendent, Nancy Kline, select pieces to purchase that become a part of a permanent collection at their respective high schools and the Superintendent’s office.

Who Says There’s NO Growth In Martin County

In photo: (L to R) Construction of Indian Street Bridge and Sailfish Splash Waterpark

By: Dan Carmody

Martin County – Start -- Palm City -- The Guardians say the location is too far outside the Urban Services District (USD).

The reason the proposed location is outside the USD is because that's where the highway is and that's where the interchange is! The hotel/restaurant/gas station portion of the cable water park's plan is sited on land expressly designated to provide such services alongside the highway. And there is no change in land-use required, these uses are already allowed.

The Guardians say there must be a determination of need for the services.

A market study was done in February of this year that clearly demonstrates a need. (Actually, anyone who has driven from Palm Beach to Stuart knows there is a long, long stretch of highway between Indiantown Road and Kanner Highway without services - that's why the land use was established on this site.) The Florida Department of Transportation's current traffic counts are at 66,500 for this area, projected to rise to 88,800 by 2020. A volume of just 40,000 supports a gas station/restaurant/convenience store. The closest comparable hotels at the Kanner Highway off-ramp normally exceed 90% occupancy during season and often turn business away.

The Guardians say an expensive water/wastewater treatment facility has to be built to support the services, sometimes these plants need to be replaced.

Yes, a treatment facility does have to be built. The owners of the property are aware of this and they have to fund this facility out of their own pockets. There is no taxpayer money of any kind being used for this. And, if the facility is not adequate or becomes inadequate, the owners are required to fix or replace it. There are many of these types of treatment facilities all over the country.

The Guardians say construction will require a waiver of the county's wetlands protection regulations.

The wetlands will not be impacted. The only waiver that is needed is for mitigation for wetland buffers - and these buffers have already been impacted, so the mitigation will fix an issue that already exists. More than 65% of the site is going to be open space and wetlands.

The Guardians say the Expressway-Oriented Transit Commercial Service Center that was approved by the county should only be used for travelers, not as a designation.

The gas station/hotel/restaurant will be used by travelers. The language doesn't say anything about not allowing a feature that would actually, heaven forbid, be

a place people want to go to.

The Guardians say the Town of Jupiter Island, the Stuart News and the Palm Beach Post have all expressed concerns about this project.

The Town of Jupiter Island and some of its residents are closely tied to the Guardians, so that's no surprise.   The Palm Beach Post's Martin County columnist, Sally Swartz, has never been unbiased; she is also closely aligned with the Guardians and is a part-time independent contractor for the paper, not a member of their editorial board. The Stuart News actually said that the park proposal appears to have a lot of merit and to be a fine recreational and economic development project. They did express some concern that there was not an over-arching plan in place for western Hobe Sound, but none about the park.

We plan to write more on William Fruth's report, released yesterday, on the outlook for the Martin County economy but if our commissioners actually listen to the continuous sky-is-falling rhetoric like the Guardians have spewed out over this low-impact, contributory cable water park proposal, we truly fear for the future of our county.

In the meantime, please email our commissioners at comish@martin.fl.us [mailto:comish@martin.fl.us] right away and tell them you support the cable water park -- and we'd really appreciate you joining us at the public hearing on Tuesday at 3pm!

Kane Senior center Hosts Martin County Council of Chambers

In photo: Guest Speaker: Bill Fruth, Policom Corporation speaks to Chamber leaders

Port Salerno  -- The mornings highlight was a presentation by Bill Fruth, POLICOM Corporation on economic development in Martin County.

Fruth shared the historical data, as well as the severe economic impact generated from the job losses in the construction, manufacturing and financial industry sectors.  His presentation covered all industry sectors and compared Martin County’s economy to that of the State and the Nation.  Fruth pointed out that Martin County since 1980 data showed that Martin County was not in a position for primary job creation in the near future.

Fruth’s “realistic” forecast for new job creation in 2012 set a benchmark of 200 jobs. Given the fact that he also predicts a loss of 150 primary jobs in the same time period, the “net” 50 new primary jobs does not paint a rosy future economically in the near future.  His numbers also reveals that the number of new, primary jobs needed to meet minimal expectations will need rise to 400 in 2013, 410 in 2014, 435 in 2015, with a fairly significant jump to 640 in 2016.  Based on these numbers, a slow but steady increase in primary jobs will turn our economy around, but it will take all of us working together to successfully achieve these goals.

One of the more significant statements made by Fruth was that; “a goal must be set for 90 days average for approval for permitting for anything proposed impacting on economic development. He pointed to Pasco, Pinellas and Clay Counties as communities who had implemented approval strategies that have turned around their economies in recent years.

Unfortunately the 2 county commissioners that needed to attend this mornings presentation, Fielding Heard were not in attendance. Recently numerous real estate development projects that had over 3 years of vetting both ecologically and economically, have been turned down by the county commission on 3 – 2 votes.

We can only hope that these absent commissioners will view the presentation on Chanel 20 and at least become informed that there is another perspective on these issues. Serious consideration for both sides is part of the due diligence process when holding elected office regardless of political climate.

The Martin County “Council of Chambers” is a coming together from time-to-time of all five Chambers of Commerce for breakfast, lunch, or in workshop forums to mix and mingle memberships and exchange ideas for a better future for the Martin county business community.

PROM 2012

Stuart -- At Martin County High School last evening a rite of passage for generations of American teenagers for nearly a century occurred and Out2 was there for the 12th year covering what has become something that is just as important as the Prom itself, that is of course the pre-prom traditional photo shoot. High school prom is usually the first formal event in the lives of young people and for many teenagers; the prom is the most stressful event of their lives. It intensifies peer pressure over issues of inclusion and exclusion but the overwhelming question; how do I look? That question is most important when it comes to the young lady's dress.

The word "prom" was first used in the 1890s as a shortened form of "promenade," a reference to formal dances in which the guests would display their fashions and dancing, skills during the evening's grand march. In the United States, it came to be believed by parents and educators that a prom, or formal dinner-dance, would be an important lesson in social skills, especially in a theoretically classless society that valued behavior over breeding. The prom was seen as a way to instill manners into children, all under the watchful eye of chaperons.

The first proms were held in the 1920s. By the 1930s, proms were common across the country. For many older Americans, the prom was a modest, home-grown affair in the school gymnasium, often decorated with crepe-paper streamers. Prom-goers were well dressed but not lavishly decked out: boys wore jacket and tie and girls their Sunday dress. Couples danced to music provided by a local amateur band or a record player.

Today, with boys renting expensive tuxedos and girls attired in designer gowns, stretch limousines hired to drive the entourage of prom-goers to restaurants and eventually the event itself...THE PROM

Hutchinson Island -- Stuart -- The ‘flavors’ of Stuart and the greater Martin County area were on display this week offering something for everyone: beachside and coastal towns where outdoor activities and nature take center stage; historic towns with tree-lined streets, quaint sidewalk cafes, restaurants, art galleries, charming antique stores and brand name stores you’re familiar with; ‘Old Florida’ towns where rodeos and orange groves, as well as cowboys still exist; and an old fishing village where fisherman still bring their catch to market each day and where world-class sport fishing tournaments are hosted every year.

West Liberty University is a forward-looking, four-year public university steeped in a rich heritage as West Virginia’s oldest institution of higher education.  Established as West Liberty Academy in 1837 (26 years before the state was admitted to the Union), it was created to respond to the need for higher educational opportunities west of the Appalachian ridge.  The institution is named for the town in which it is located.  West Liberty was so named in the late 18th Century as the westernmost point of the new liberty provided through the Declaration of Independence.

You Really Missed it….You Should Have Been Here Yesterday!

Hutchinson Island – Stuart – Did you see the hydroplane racing up close? The exhilarating family-friendly affair featured top-tier racers from throughout the United States and Canada driving tricked-out, high-end boats that reached speeds of more than 100 mph.  All weekend long these high-performance vessels were on display in the dry pit area.  It was a great opportunity to get up close and personal with the boats and the race teams.  Spectators also enjoyed live music, kids’ activities, vendors, Vintage Alley and more.

Race teams certainly brought the competition, fun and adrenaline-pumping sport of powerboat racing to life at the first annual Stuart Sailfish Regatta on April 14 and 15.  It was a weekend of rooster tails, close calls, impressive speeds and cheering crowds of upwards of 15,000 over the course of the two-day event.  For a complete list of results, visit http://www.StuartSailfishRegatta.org.

Saturday featured four race classes including the SST 120, the SST 60, the Super Sport and the SST 150.  Winners of the SST 120 are Terry Rinker (boat #10) in first place, Jeff Reno (boat #34) in second place and Brian Burkhardt (boat #28) in third place.  SST 60 winners are Robert Rinker (boat #10) in first place, Carole Reno (boat #16) in second place and Stephen Dinicolantonio (boat #73) in third place.  Gary Harris (boat #180) won first place, Ron Titus (boat #47) took second place and Danny McManus (boat #8) finished third in the Super Sport category.  Winners of the SST 150 are Robert Dinicolantonio (boat #33) in first place, Jeff Reno (boat #34) in second and Brian Burkhardt (boat #28) in third.

On Sunday, the program included the SST 60, the SST 150, Super Sport and the SST 120 race classes.  In the SST 60 class, Robert Rinker (boat #10) finished first, Carole Reno (boat #16) came in second and William Mastro (boat #89) took third.  The SST 150 winners are Robert Dinicolantonio (boat #33) in first, Jeff Reno (boat #34) in second and Brian Burkhardt (boat #28) in third.  Super Sport winners are Danny McManus (boat #8) in first, Ron Titus (boat #47) in second and Gary Harris (boat #180) in third.  In the SST 120 race class, Terry Rinker (boat #10) came in first place, Donnie McDowell (boat #3) in second place and Jeff Reno (boat #34) in third.

The Sunday grand finale featured Miss Stuart and Shameless, hydroplane boats that reached speeds of 150 mph.  Going into turn one a few laps in, the Miss Stuart flipped.  The driver was not hurt in the incident and even waived to the crowd that he was okay.  Miss Stuart owner Jon McDonald was worried about his driver, but was very happy to see that he wasn’t injured.

McDonald has big plans for Miss Stuart.  The boat is on its way to be fixed as quickly and safely as possible in order to continue to race the rest of the season.  “We’re addicted to the sport and we can’t wait to sponsor the Stuart Sailfish Regatta again next year!” said McDonald.

Thank you to Southern Eagle, Seacoast National Bank, Leighton Security, the Hutchinson Island Marriott, JACK FM, EMS, Cickfila, the Realtor Association of Martin County and the many other organizations that sponsored the Stuart Sailfish Regatta.  Without their support, the Regatta would still be just a dream.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Maritime & Classic Boat Museum, the USS Sailing Center and the Children’s Museum.

This is a flash message from the Martin 9/12 TeaParty Committee.

This is why we call you a patriot! View Allen Wests comments at the Jensen Beach Town Hall in your browser.

The Martin 9/12 TeaParty Committee Special Notice

Today's front page of The Stuart News angered one of the Committeemen of the Republican Executive Committee. The article was so unfair and, in my opinion, inflammatory, that I can not reprint it. You can link to the on-line version HERE.

After several failed attempts to contact the paper's editor on the phone, the Republican friend got in his car and went down to the Stuart News Office Building to visit the editor in person.

Our intrepid Republican friend treated Mr. Tomasik to a lesson in journalism by stressing two key points:

* The article (or column) by Eve Samples characterized Congressman Wests comment (concerning communists in Congress) in a false manner, asserting that he proffered them as fact, when he actually expressed his OPINION.

* Eve Samples' entire column was positioned in the banner rank on the front page, making it appear as NEWS, as most papers do for news. While it may not be picked up as such by the news services, local readers are treated to a sham that tarnishes a sitting member of Congress. Mr. Tomasik was gracious and listened for a long time until our friend was satisfied that he had received the message and was considering it. He even indicated that the way Allen West's comment was portrayed may have been "unfair."

This screen-shot will show you why the column's position on the front page obscures the "opinion" nature of Eve Samples' piece.

Our complaining Republican pointed out to Mr. Tomasik that Allen West's opinion was being tested as a factual assertion, while the newspaper was presenting Eve Samples' opinion as a news fact, unchallenged.

This kind of logic was irrefutable.

This story was related to me because our Republican friend thinks that some of you might agree with him in his assessment of this "column" and the unfair portrayal of Congressman Allen West. He believes that if you express your opinion to the editor about this newspaper's policy of presenting an opinion column in such a fashion, it just might make a difference. It seems appalling that the paper continues to allow Ms. Samples to use its front page as her own personal weapon.

Col. West can probably handle this on his own and in his own fashion. In my opinion, it is about time that a Congressman showed enough courage to call out the socialist-Progressives in Congress and make them squirm for a bit. A skunk can call itself a harmless rodent with a cute bushy tail, but it still stinks. Socialists and communist sympathizers have been having their way for decades and must be called out. Changing their label does not make their destruction of First Principles any less onerous. It may be time to have this discussion in the open.

Just remember that Eve Samples' (and Mark Tomasik's) job is to sell newspapers.

- Jim (& Jim & Jim)

A Picky Gourmet/The House of Brews Hosts Jensen Beach Chamber April Business After Hours

In photo: Congressman Allen West and Martin County Sheriff Bob Crowder pause for a refreshment at The Jensen Beach Chamber  Business After Hours

Jensen Baech -- The national Presidential Campaign came to Jensen Beach this evening at the Jensen Beach business After Hours at The Brews House.

Congressman Allen West arrived early, just before a Scheduled town Hall at the Jensen Beach Community Center.

Congressman West and Sheriff Bob Crowder are in the beginning stages of a Congressional race possibly being short circuited if Sarah Palin has her way and Governor Romney nominates West for the number 2 position in his candidacy.

The 1200-square-foot gourmet store offers "A majority of the beers are Florida craft beers," owner Brent Weisfeld said. Because A Picky Gourmet will be incorporated into the new space, wine and beer from "The Beer Wall" at the store will be available for carry out. But many craft brews are only available on draft, Weisfeld said. He has a solution for those carry outs. Growlers, special reusable bottles designed to hold carbonated brews, will be available to purchase. "It's neat stuff," he said. A growler allows you to enjoy those drafts at home or as a gift for the beer lover who has everything — everything except a good draft beer at home.
The Jensen Beach Chamber of Commerce is located in downtown historic Jensen Beach. Through seminars, workshops and monthly luncheons the Chamber provides members with many opportunities to network and enhance businesses.
Jensen Beach is not only considered one of the most charming places to vacation in Florida, but our quaint community was also recently named as one of the top places to retire in the United States!
You can feel the “Old Florida” charm when you visit Jensen Beach - a unique riverfront town over a century old. Hutchinson Island beaches are natural and captivating.

With its perfect climate, natural beauty and warm hospitality, Jensen Beach and Hutchinson Island offer lots of things to do - great fishing spots, popular events, challenging golf courses, wonderful dining choices, quality lodging facilities, and unlimited shopping opportunities from a regional mall, to unique boutiques and art galleries.
From the scenic coastline of Hutchinson Island to the historic shops of Jensen Beach through the lagoons of Sewall’s Point along the tree-lined streets of Rio... this is Jensen Beach.

2012 Cattle Barrons Ball Hosted By Rock’n H Ranch

Palm City -- The American Cancer Society of Martin County hosted the Cattle Barons’ Ball on Saturday evening at the Rockin’ H Ranch in Palm City. The Cattle Barons’ Ball is not the typical high society ball, it is a down home, good ole fashioned country hoe-down. The five-hour event includes gaming, dancing, entertainment featuring rising country music star Amber Leigh, dining, live auction by local auctioneer Reed Hartman and silent auction — all held at an authentic Martin County ranch. Gentlemen wear jeans and ladies dress up as much or as little as they like — from denim to diamonds and sparkles to spurs.

“The Cattle Barons’ Ball is a fun way event, but the mission is a serious one,” said ACS Cattle Barons’ Ball Chair Tony Barletta. “Like all of us in the community, I am painfully aware of the impact that cancer has on our families and friends. Supporting this event is an easy way to help those who are battling cancer.”

A signature fund-raiser for the American Cancer Society (ACS), The Cattle Barons’ Ball has raised more than $1 million in the past 10 years in support of the ACS of Martin County. A portion of the money raised from the event will go towards The American Cancer Society Florida Division’s Reaching Out to Cancer Kids ( R.O.C.K.) programs which include collage scholarships, summer camp and a families weekend in Orlando .

Founded in 1976, R.O.C.K. Camp, recently celebrated 35 years of bringing children with cancer together for a week of fun and adventure at summer camp. Last summer, eight campers from the Treasure Coast who have endured the day–to-day challenges of surviving cancer spent a week of fun, friendship and the opportunity to go camping at R.O.C.K. camp. There is no charge for R.O.C.K. program participants – it is fully funded by the American Cancer Society.

Meet Brenda Leigh AGAIN at Cummings Library

Palm City -- In the Spring I introduced you to Benda Leigh as she painted the mural at the downtown Convention and Visitors bureau building.

Brenda can be seen now and then, here and there all over the county, on a scaffold or a ladder putting her creative energies to work for all to enjoy.

Today she is working on a mural at the Cumming Library in Palm City where she is doing a Martin County wet lands theme in the children’s section of the library.

Out2martincounty.com is a photo journal featuring people, "Who they are, what they do and where they do it".
